The Belgian Physical Society & the International Solvay Institutes have the pleasure to present their joint 5 week Webinars on Nuclear Fusion Research. The program is available here.
The first webinar will be held on Wednesday 29 September at 4:00 p.m
Speaker: Dr. Julien Hillairet (Directeur de Recherches, Institut de Recherche sur la Fusion Magnétique, CEA Cadarache, France).
Title: Introduction to nuclear fusion research
Abstract: Nuclear fusion is one of the promising options for generating large amounts of carbon- free energy in the future. Fusion is the process that powers the Sun and all other stars, where energy is released by the fusion of light atomic nuclei. Fusion scientists and engineers are developing the technology for use in future power stations. This webinar will introduction the basics of nuclear fusion, and give an overview of magnetic confinement systems, tokamaks and stellarators, and inertial fusion. The challenges for the extrapolation of the experiments of today to future large scale, commercially viable fusion reactors will be discussed.
